In The End
© 2005 Joseph J. Spatarella
What’s the matter with time?
Is a face in the clock meant to see?
Reality left behind
Lost in a strange mystery
Is it all in the mind?
Changes and choices
Dreaming what never can be
If we could travel, slipping through the hands of time
Crossing lifetimes with the wind
If we could live a minute lost once again
Would it matter in the end?
What would a future be for?
If we knew how the story would end
The only movement is forward
Different chapter around every bend
With history left behind
We can live in each moment, a moment that lasts for all time
If we could travel, slipping through the hands of time
Crossing lifetimes with the wind
If we could live a minute lost once again
Would it matter in the end?
Take a second time to live
Step through the doorway
Don’t ever be afraid
Make it your way
If we could travel, slipping through the hands of time
Crossing lifetimes with the wind
If we could live a minute lost once again
Would it matter in the end?
Would it matter in the end?
Would it matter in the end?

Not What You Say
© 2005 by Joseph J. Spatarella
Stand up and smile
Tell us all we want to hear
Engage our minds
About economies and fear
Spin doctored lines
Help to make the message clear
It’s voting time
Let’s pretend we even care
It’s the truth that stands between us
Like a stranger on a train
It’s the lies that will defeat us
Free tomorrow, kill today
It’s what you do NOT what you say
The words they fly
On wings of energy and greed
Grey by design
Casting shadows on beliefs
The doubt divides
Spreading wildly like disease
It sparks a fire
The issues burning like the trees
It’s the truth that stands between us
Like a window from the rain
It’s the lies that will defeat us
Pay tomorrow, spend today
It’s what you do NOT what you say
Stand up and lie
You can’t defend the past four years
So now it’s time
To stop the horror and the tears
Unemployment lines
Help to make the reasons clear
It’s voting time
When you leave, we just won’t care
It’s the truth that stands between us
Like a stranger on a train
It’s the lies that will defeat us
Free tomorrow, peace today
It’s what you do NOT what you say

Walkin in Darkness
© 2004 by Joseph J. Spatarella
Hot night -
New
York
sleeps
Round the corner voices speak
Feet fall on cracked cement
Should take a bus but the money’s spent
Don’t have too far to go
Too scared to let it show
Slow down, take a breath
Fear of violence, seeing red
I’m walkin in darkness
Counting shadows as they fall
Screaming in silence
Can’t wait can’t leave can’t trust at all
Dreaming of flying
Leaving the world behind
Look around and cross the street
Hear a noise and grit my teeth
Body steps from behind a sign
Shows the knife and I know it’s time
Give up everything I own
Turn around and run for home
Next time won’t be like this
Cage the anger – clench the fist
I’m walkin in darkness
Counting shadows as they fall
Screaming in silence
Can’t wait can’t leave can’t trust at all
Dreaming of flying
Leaving the world behind
I didn’t choose this neighborhood
Still it’s home to me
When I wake up in the morning will it change?
It’s all the same…
Long night – out on the street
The junkies cry and the dealers treat
Heads fall on cracked cement
Should buy a meal but the money’s spent
Don’t have too far to go
Before we let our feelings show
Slow down, take a breath
Fear of hatred, quiet death
I’m walkin in darkness
Counting shadows as they fall
Screaming in silence
Can’t wait can’t leave can’t trust at all
Dreaming of flying
Leaving the world behind
I’m walking in darkness

Just Enough
© 2005 by Joseph J. Spatarella
Young - Full of dreams
Wanted one of everything for me
Now - I can see
How meaningless the toys of life can be
All I want is to get by
With just enough
All I need for my life
Is just enough, just enough
Greed - Affecting me
It’s enough to take away my dignity
No drug - Can satisfy
Voices speak like ghosts and tell you lies
All I want is to get by
With just enough
All I need for my life
Is just enough, just enough
Falling down
I’ve sunk so far
Crawling under piles of debt
From living large
All I want is to get by
With just enough
All I need for my life
Is just enough, just enough
Now - My spirit’s free
Wanting nothing else
‘cause I’ve got
Just enough, just enough, just enough, just enough
Spoken:
Everybody bought the dream
Another get rich scheme
Everyone knew the odds were in our favor
Then the bubble broke us down
From greedy smiles to poor house frowns
The joys in life replaced with more hard labor
It’s all about the money
It’s all about the money
It’s all about the money
It’s all about the money

The Battle Of East New York
© 2005 by Joseph J. Spatarella
Bullets flying over
Brooklyn
Fatal fireworks display
Another drug deal turns the corner
Crossfire takes a child away
No one knows how it happened
What reason’s left to blame
“All the drugs must come from somewhere”
Grieving mothers can’t explain
East New York
is under fire
Bullets flying everywhere
Fighting demons in this battle we devise
Souls of children search for heaven there
Malt liquor box memorial
Football jersey, photo smile
Blue balloons above cardboard sympathy
Candles light crying eyes
No one wonders why it happened
Guess the child got in the way
Was it war that he imagined?
When he went outside to play
East New York
is under fire
Politicians can’t explain
“We try hard to keep the crime rate down”
Souls of children walk in the flames
’69, I was a young kid
Living there in violent times
Fought to find the road to freedom
Heroin took so many lives
Didn’t think it still could happen
Sure that time would fix this place
Only there the world stopped turning
Sad to say, it’s just the same
East New York
is under fire
People don’t know what to do
Another day, another gunfight on the street
Souls of children walk in the ruins
East New York
is under fire
Bullets flying everywhere
Fighting demons in this battle we devise
Souls of children search for heaven there
