Behind The Sign
Joe Spatarella & Kate Maguire © 2010
One lost moment
One small place in time
A fly on a roadmap
An inch or a hundred miles
Can’t see the future - hidden behind the sign
Can’t see the future - hidden behind the sign
Long lost highway
One more place to find
No destination
Running from forgotten crimes
Future is waiting - hidden behind the sign
Anticipating - living behind the sign
There’s wisdom at the station
Slim Jim and Coke provide
A mouthful of salvation
Keep you going till you find
One good reason
To leave that life behind
Can’t see the future - hidden behind the sign
Can’t see the future - hidden behind the sign
There’s wisdom at the station
Slim Jim and Coke provide
A mouthful of salvation
Keep you going till you find
That one lost moment
One small place in time
No second chances
Close your eyes and drive
Can’t see who’s waiting - hidden behind the sign
Anticipating - living behind the sign
Behind the sign, Behind the sign
Behind the sign, Behind the sign
Another Time

Radio voices tell me bad news
Driving me crazy
Please take me back to the world that I knew
Not so long ago…
I headed the right way
It wasn’t too far
But I couldn’t find you
You left that old sweater in the back of my car
That’s all I know
The distance between us
Left you so small
Memories dance in the mirrors
I lost all direction
You took back your heart
Then everything took a bad turn
No more looking for answers
Wishing for time
Now that you left me
For some other guy
I’ll say my goodbyes to you
Another time, another time
Radio voices sing me the blues
Making me lazy
Please take me back to the life that I knew
Not so long ago…
I headed the wrong way
And took it too far
To try to remind you
Take that old sweater from the back of my car
So I can let go
The distance between us
Left me so small
Memories dance in the mirrors
I lost all direction
With no way to your heart
Then everything took a bad turn
No more looking for answers
Wishing for time
Now that you left me
For some other guy
I’ll say my goodbyes to you
Another time, another time
Another time
1700 Miles to Denver
by Joe Spatarella © 2010
Unraveled like a string, my life has come apart
Lost my job, lost my love, she broke my heart
All that’s left is this old car, a bag of clothes
I need a place to call my home
Headlights blur -
Tears in my eyes
Can’t get away
Highway sign, white letters
Shine and light the way
The sign says:
1700 miles to Denver
Pedal to the floor
I can make it in two days
There’s a place high in the mountains
Where I’ll be safe
Drivin’ old route 70 each night for twenty years
This road goes on and on
Once you drop off all your fear
I feel so free and disconnected from this place
The white lines point to different days
Headlights blur -
Tears in my eyes
Can’t get away
Highway sign, white letters
Shine and light the way
The sign says:
1700 miles to Denver
Pedal to the floor
I can make it in two days
There’s a place high in the mountains
Where I’ll be safe
SPOKEN:
That night he missed his exit and his car ran off the road
A leaky gas tank, a spark that just exploded
Police clocked him at 100 miles per hour
He left this life with so much power…
The sign says:
1700 miles to Denver
Pedal to the floor
I can make it in two days
There’s a place high in the mountains
Where I’ll be safe
The Traveler
Joe Spatarella & Kate Maguire © 2010
“Not a soul I can believe in
Ain’t no truth in what they say”
At the bottom of the glass
No answers, only grey
“My world collapsed around me
When I tried to take a stand
Now my mistress is the road
No home, got no plans”
With grace and liquid sympathy
Barmaid pours another gin
She says “you just don’t understand
It’s your own mess you’re in
We try to find the reason
For the trouble in our lives
We need hope to make it through
My advice, word to the wise:
The world is full of lies and we believe them
We think we need them when the truth is hard to swallow
We are masters of disguise that hide our feelings
The hurt and grieving
But we’ve got to face tomorrow”
In the shadows of the smoky room
She can only guess his age
Scars and lines mark every fight
The loss left on his face
He’s just another traveler
Without a place to hide
Running from his past
Still believing all the lies
Because the lies are what we live for
The things we fight and die for
The pain we all endure
To find love -
We break our hearts
To find love -
We fall apart
Along the way
The world is full of lies and we believe them
We think we need them when the truth is hard to swallow
We are masters of disguise that hide our feelings
The hurt and grieving
But we’ve got to face tomorrow
The world
So many lies
One truth
We live tomorrow, then tomorrow
More Dead Than Alive
by Joe Spatarella © 2010
He’s reached the end of life
He doesn’t care
Watching the sands of time run out
From his old chair
He burns inside – the flames of rage
Now it ends, something wild
Flees the cage
It was years ago
On the darkest of nights
His car left the road
But his exit was denied
In the end he was
More dead than alive
She has a name - he won’t say it anymore
She walked away – without a word
Note on the door
Out of his mind – no love to hold him down
He tried to run
Fate stepped in - turned him around
It was years ago
On the darkest of nights
His car left the road
But his exit was denied
In the end he was
More dead than alive
He takes a final breath
Thinks about her hair
He’d sell his soul for just one smile
To see her there
He knows the road to hell is lined with lost desires
Now it ends, throw what remains into the fire
It was years ago
On the darkest of nights
His car left the road
But his exit was denied
In the end he was
More dead than alive
More dead than alive
He’s reached the end of life
He doesn’t care…
